G7 Slams Russia’s Ongoing War Against Ukraine

The US has condemned Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, marking a significant shift in policy from previous administrations. Finance ministers from the G7 group of large economies promised to increase sanctions on Moscow if Vladimir Putin fails to agree to a ceasefire.

This new stance comes after Donald Trump and his team suggested they may withdraw as peace mediators, having failed to secure a truce during Trump’s first 100 days in office. The G7 finance ministers’ statement emphasizes the group’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In contrast to previous US statements, which described the conflict as the “Ukraine-Russia crisis”, the new language acknowledges Russia’s role in the ongoing war. This change reflects a shift towards more collective support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Putin to negotiate a peaceful resolution.
