Legendary singer Billy Joel has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition that affects hearing, vision, and balance. In May 2025, he announced his diagnosis after canceling all remaining tour dates.
Joel’s team stated that the recent concerts exacerbated his health condition, causing issues with these vital functions. The singer has since started undergoing physical therapy to address the problem.
NPH is a rare condition where cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, disrupting several functions. It’s reversible and can be treated with surgery to implant valves. Although its symptoms mimic dementia, NPH affects only 0.2% of people between 50-80 years old.
Joel fell on stage during a concert in February 2025 due to potential gait issues caused by the condition. Despite this incident, he’s expected to make a full recovery and resume his tour in the future.
The singer has expressed gratitude for fans’ support during this time and looks forward to returning to the stage when possible.
