A resident of Allegheny County has contracted salmonella linked to a multi-state outbreak, according to the county’s health department. Most people associated with this current outbreak reported contact with backyard poultry.
Public health officials are working to gather more information about potential exposures. People affected by salmonella may experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, watery diarrhea, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
Symptoms typically start within 6 hours to 6 days after infection and last for four to seven days. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that even healthy-looking backyard chickens and ducks can carry salmonella germs.
To prevent infection, the health department recommends washing hands after touching poultry, eggs, or their living area. This includes avoiding eating or drinking around backyard poultry, cleaning supplies regularly, collecting eggs often, cooking egg-based dishes to 160°F, and seeking medical attention if symptoms occur.
