Microsoft Taps Copilot for Notepad, Fueling ‘All-Things AI’ Trend

Microsoft has taken its popular text editor, Notepad, to the next level by integrating its AI-powered Copilot feature. The update, rolled out to Windows Insiders, allows users to generate text within the app using Copilot’s natural language processing capabilities.

The new feature, dubbed “Write,” requires users to sign in with their Microsoft account and select where they want the generated content to go. Users can then review and refine the output with follow-up prompts. Copilot can be disabled in the app’s settings if desired.

This move is part of a broader trend at Microsoft, where AI-powered features are being rolled out across various inbox apps, including Outlook and Paint. While some may see this as an unnecessary addition, others may appreciate the assistance for tasks such as writing emails or generating content quickly.

Notepad, which dates back to Windows 1.0, has undergone significant changes in recent years, with previous updates introducing a “Rewrite” function that allowed users to tweak text based on tone, format, and length requirements.
