Cannes Predictions: Who Will Take Home Top Honors?

The final weekend of the 78th Cannes Film Festival is here, and with it comes the highly anticipated Palme d’Or ceremony. While “Sentimental Value” by Joachim Trier has garnered significant attention for its emotional drama about a woman reconnecting with her estranged father, several films are vying for top spots.

According to sources close to the jury, “Sound of Falling” is a strong contender for the Grand Prix, thanks to its enduring impact on viewers long after its initial screening. Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague”, meanwhile, has critics raving with its warm and cerebral portrait of artistic reinvention, making it a top pick for the Jury Prize.

Other notable films include Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident”, which is said to be a devastating yet subtle exploration of politics, and Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love”, starring Jennifer Lawrence in a career-best performance. The jury may also honor Ari Aster’s “Eddington” with the Special Jury Prize for its ambition and experimental edge.

In terms of acting categories, Paul Mescal is predicted to win Best Actor for his portrayal of a sensitive soul navigating music and intimacy during wartime. Elle Fanning and Renate Reinsve from “Sentimental Value” are also in the running for Best Actress, with Lawrence being a clear frontrunner.

The distributor Neon has played its hand well, holding rights to three likely prize-winners: “Sentimental Value”, “It Was Just an Accident”, and “The Secret Agent”. Mubi is making a strong case with “Die, My Love” and early favorite “Sound of Falling”.

As the jury spreads love across the field, it’s clear that “Sentimental Value” holds the strongest hand. The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, and fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the top honors.
