Cancer Diagnoses on the Rise Among Younger People, NIH Finds

Cancer deaths among US citizens aged 18-49 have decreased over the years, however, a new study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reveals an alarming trend – cancer diagnoses are increasing in younger people.

According to recent research, among the 33 types of cancer studied from 2010 to 2019, 14 cancers showed rising incidence rates in those under 50 years old. These include breast, colorectal, kidney, testicular, and uterine cancers.

The NIH says that these increases are likely due to factors such as changes in screening or detection methods and updates in clinical diagnosis coding. Conversely, for 19 of the types of cancer analyzed, early-onset cases have decreased. Notably, lung and prostate cancer rates also show a decline.

Experts point out that while there is cause for concern regarding rising cancer diagnoses among younger people, some cancers are showing declining incidence rates. To reduce one’s own risk of developing cancer, health experts recommend adopting certain precautions.
