Cornell University’s men’s lacrosse team secured an 11-9 victory over Penn State at Gillette Stadium, avenging its only loss of the season and advancing to the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship game. The Big Red, led by senior midfielder Hugh Kelleher and attack Michael Long, dominated the second half, outscoring Penn State 6-1 after trailing 9-6 at halftime.
Kelleher recorded a hat trick, while Long scored five points, including two goals. Senior goalkeeper Wyatt Knust made nine saves, including six in the first quarter, as Cornell held Penn State scoreless for much of the game. Jack Cascadden won 15-of-23 faceoffs and scored a goal, helping the Big Red secure its third consecutive win.
Cornell will now face the winner of Monday’s second semifinal matchup between No. 2 Maryland and No. 6 Syracuse in the championship game. The team has a history with both squads, having defeated Maryland in 1971 and 1976 but falling to the Terrapins in 2022. Cornell also faced off against Syracuse in the championship game twice, losing both times.
With its 13th consecutive win, Cornell has established a new single-season record for victories (170) and secured its place in Monday’s NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship game for the ninth time in program history. The team will compete for its fourth national title under head coach Connor Buczek.
