Completing the Edinburgh Marathon for My Stepdad in Memory

In memory of my stepfather Ronnie, who died from incurable blood cancer last year, I’ve embarked on an incredible journey to raise money and awareness for Myeloma UK. Despite having only two doses of chemotherapy when he passed away, it was his second hospital visit that marked the beginning of a long and arduous battle against multi-organ failure.

Ronnie’s story is a poignant reminder of how quickly this devastating disease can strike, often with little warning. His symptoms were non-descript, making it difficult for healthcare professionals to diagnose him in time. The delay in diagnosis led to a poor prognosis, highlighting the need for better awareness and education among GPs.

As a nurse myself, I’m deeply aware of the challenges faced by patients with myeloma. It’s why I’ve chosen to support Myeloma UK, which is based in Edinburgh and dedicated to researching ways to improve diagnosis and treatment. The charity’s efforts to train GPs to recognize early warning signs are particularly crucial.

This year’s Edinburgh Marathon is a personal challenge for me, as it marks my first time taking on the grueling course. Training has been tough, but I’m driven by the desire to honor Ronnie’s memory and raise vital funds for Myeloma UK. So far, I’ve raised over £1,500, and I aim to reach my target of £2,000.

If you’d like to support me on this journey, please visit my JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/page/beths-miles-for-myeloma. Every donation counts, and it would mean the world to me if you could help make a difference for families affected by myeloma.
