This Memorial Day weekend could be one of the biggest box office weekends of all time, thanks to Disney’s highly anticipated releases. One film, Lilo & Stitch, is on track to secure one of the highest domestic opening weekend grosses of 2025.
Lilo & Stitch is set to debut with a predicted three-day range of $160M – $185M, which would put its opening weekend gross above that of Disney’s animated predecessor, Moana (2016), and significantly higher than last year’s live-action remake, Snow White ($42.2M).
If Lilo & Stitch meets expectations, it will become the top-grossing remake of a Disney animated classic since The Lion King in 2019. That year, Disney released four remakes, including The Lion King, Aladdin, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Dumbo, which combined to earn over $1.12 billion domestically.
Other successful remakes include Beauty and the Beast, which holds the record for the highest-grossing non-animated musical of all time, with a worldwide total of $1.35 billion. The Jungle Book remake also performed well, spending three weeks as the highest-grossing film in the domestic market and five weeks in the top five.
Alice in Wonderland was another successful remake, grossing over $1 billion during its original release, thanks to the popularity of 3D technology at the time. Aladdin’s 2019 Memorial Day weekend opening made it the second-highest opener for Disney at the time, despite a crowded market.
With Lilo & Stitch set to debut on this weekend, fans are eagerly anticipating its success and potential record-breaking performance.
