The Boston Red Sox are facing a significant injury blow as third baseman Alex Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right quad strain. Manager Alex Cora announced that Bregman’s injury is similar to one he suffered in 2021, which kept him out for over two months with the Houston Astros.
Bregman’s absence will create an opportunity for prospect Marcelo Mayer, the No. 6 ranked player in baseball, to contribute to the team’s push for a postseason berth. Mayer, 22, has shown promise at shortstop and could also see time at second base due to Trevor Story’s slump. Cora stated that Mayer will play multiple positions, including third, second, and shortstop.
The injury is a setback for Bregman, who was hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs before the injury. His teammate, Rafael Devers, was initially expected to fill the void at third base but will remain as designated hitter due to the team’s offseason decision.
Mayer has already made his MLB debut, starting in Saturday’s doubleheader, and is seen as Boston’s long-term solution at shortstop. However, his glove work is regarded as above-average, making it possible for him to replace Trevor Story at shortstop or Ceddanne Rafaela at center field.
The loss of Bregman and Triston Casas, who ruptured his left knee tendon earlier in the season, has added to the Red Sox’s infield woes. Despite this, Cora remains optimistic about the team’s chances, saying that they will continue to play good baseball and win games if they believe in themselves.
