Power Cut Disrupts Cannes Film Festival’s Final Day

A power cut suspected to be caused by sabotage disrupted screenings on the final day of the Cannes Film Festival in southern France. About 160,000 homes lost power early Saturday, with supply restored later in the afternoon.

The disruption was blamed on arsonists who attacked an electricity substation in Tanneron, which supplies power to Cannes. A second outage occurred when a pylon near Villeneuve-Loubet had its legs cut.

Shops and restaurants struggled to operate without power, with one owner saying his fridges were off for hours. The festival’s final day was severely impacted, with several screenings interrupted before organisers switched to private generators.

The Palme d’Or winner announcement, featuring French actress Juliette Binoche, will still proceed as planned.
