Norovirus Identified as Cause of Outbreak at State College Restaurant

A Pennsylvania Department of Health investigation confirmed norovirus as the cause of illnesses affecting dozens of people who visited or worked at Faccia Luna, a State College restaurant. The restaurant was closed for three days after most staff and customers fell ill with gastrointestinal symptoms.

At least 40 individuals reported becoming sick with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Norovirus is highly contagious and can be spread through food, beverages, surfaces, or close contact with an infected person. The virus typically affects people in winter months.

Owner Bill McFadden stated that he initially believed norovirus was the cause of the outbreak but acknowledged that his employees did not eat contaminated salad before becoming ill. He attributed the spread of the virus to a single infected customer or employee who brought it into the restaurant, particularly during a crowded Penn State football weekend.
