Satellite imagery has revealed the extent of a devastating failure at North Korea’s naval launch ceremony, leaving the country reeling and its dictator fuming.
A photo captured by Maxar Technologies shows the twisted and partially submerged remains of the 5,000-ton destroyer in the northeastern port of Chongjin. The ship had been scheduled for its maiden voyage but was instead damaged when a flatcar guiding it failed to move during the launch process.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has blamed military officials, scientists, and shipyard operators for the “serious accident” and demanded repairs be completed before his upcoming meeting with the communist Working Party in June. The dictator ominously warned that any mistakes attributed to the “irresponsibility of relevant officials” would be investigated during the meeting.
The failed launch is a significant embarrassment for Kim Jong Un, who has been focused on building North Korea’s military arsenal as a response to Western aggression. Recent tests have included AI-powered suicide drones and claims of a nuclear submarine under construction. The country has also deployed troops to Russia to fight alongside fellow communist nation in its war against Ukraine.
