Meet Chloe Humphrey, North Carolina’s Undefeated Star Freshman

North Carolina women’s lacrosse is on the brink of an historic undefeated season and national championship title, thanks in large part to the emergence of freshman attacker Chloe Humphrey. The 5-foot-4 Humphrey has taken the college lacrosse world by storm with her impressive scoring ability, speed, and creativity.

Humphrey, a highly touted recruit from Darien, Connecticut, was ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the 2023 class by Inside Lacrosse and won the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards National Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year title in 2023. She redshirted her true freshman season due to a stress reaction foot injury but has since become one of the top scorers in the country.

In North Carolina’s semifinal win over Florida, Humphrey surpassed Tar Heels’ great Jamie Ortega for the most goals in a single season by a North Carolina player, entering Friday’s game third all-time in the record book. She caused headaches for Florida’s defense with her speed and creativity, converting goals on each of her final seven shots.

“Humphrey is so creative,” said North Carolina coach Jenny Levy. “She can score from anywhere… It’s hard to take everything away from her. She’s special.”

Humphrey leads North Carolina in scoring with 86 goals this season and has been named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, joining her sister Ashley, who also won the award. The Tar Heels face off against Northwestern in the national championship game on Sunday, with Humphrey poised to continue her impressive performance.

With an undefeated season on the line, North Carolina fans are eagerly awaiting Humphrey’s next move. Can she keep the Tar Heels’ scoring party alive as they take on the Wildcats?
