Pope Leo XIV has declared himself “Roman” as he completes formalities to become bishop of Rome, saying he feels a “serious but passionate responsibility” to serve all Romans. The first American pope formally took possession of the St. John Lateran Basilica, marking his role as bishop of Rome.
Leo assumed the title on May 8, running the 1.4-billion-strong universal Catholic Church. He will delegate daily governance to a vicar, but the ceremony marks his formal start. Pope Leo’s visit included stops at other important basilicas in Rome, including St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside the Walls.
Rome’s Mayor welcomed Pope Leo with city officials before he addressed the crowds, quoting St. Augustine as saying “With you I am Christian, and for you, bishop.” He then declared, “By special title, today I can say that for you and with you I am Roman!”
