When it comes to unwinding with a drink after work, many people opt for either beer or wine. While both have their benefits and drawbacks, experts say that neither is inherently better than the other. The key lies in the context of consumption.
According to registered dietitians Lauren Manaker and Amy Brownstein, moderate red wine consumption has several health benefits. Red wine contains polyphenols, antioxidants that may help protect the heart, lower LDL cholesterol, and reduce inflammation. Studies have shown that drinking moderate amounts of red wine can decrease LDL cholesterol levels, which is linked to a lower risk of artery-clogging and heart disease.
However, Brownstein cautions that more research is needed to confirm the health benefits of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red wine. While resveratrol may support heart health by preventing plaque buildup on artery walls and reducing inflammation, its benefits are still unclear when it comes to outweighing alcohol’s negative effects.
It’s worth noting that even with moderate consumption, it’s unlikely that the recommended therapeutic dose of resveratrol can be absorbed solely through drinking wine.
