US Still Sees Over 300 COVID Deaths Per Week

Despite progress made since the pandemic began, hundreds of COVID-19 deaths occur in the United States every week, averaging around 350 last month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this number is declining from its peak of over 25,000 deaths in January 2021.

Experts attribute the ongoing deaths to several factors. Poor vaccination rates and waning immunity are significant concerns. As of April 26, only 23% of adults aged 18 and older have received the enhanced COVID-19 vaccine during the current season, according to CDC data. Similarly, just 13% of kids have received the upgraded vaccine.

Dr. Gregory Poland, a vaccine specialist, notes that low vaccination uptake can lead to increased risk of contracting COVID-19 as immunity wanes over time. He advises people aged 65 and older to receive two doses of the updated COVID vaccination in a six-month gap to boost their protection.

Currently, the highest death rate from COVID-19 is among those aged 75 and older, with 4.66 fatalities per 100,000, according to CDC data. Public health experts emphasize that while progress has been made, COVID still poses an imminent danger to high-risk groups.
