Pope Leo XIV has declared himself “Roman” as he completes his formalities to become the bishop of Rome. In a ceremony at St. John Lateran Basilica, Rome’s cathedral and seat of the diocese, Pope Leo XIV prayed for Catholics worldwide to remain strong and joyful witnesses of the Gospel.
The first American pope took possession of the basilica in an evening Mass attended by Roman priests and faithful. He later visited St. Mary Major, where he prayed before Pope Francis’ tomb and a revered icon of the Virgin Mary.
Pope Leo XIV assumes this title as part of his responsibilities running the 1.4-billion-strong universal Catholic Church. He delegates daily governance to a vicar, but takes on the role of bishop to oversee the diocese of Rome.
Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri welcomed Pope Leo XIV at City Hall, noting that the papal election coincided with a Holy Year, an event that occurs every 25 years to invite pilgrims to Rome. The city is preparing for 30 million visitors in 2025.
Pope Leo XIV said he feels a “serious but passionate responsibility” to serve all Romans during this holy year and beyond. He quoted St. Augustine, saying “With you I am Christian, and for you, bishop.” In a special declaration, Pope Leo XIV said “By special title, today I can say that for you and with you, I am Roman!”
