Max Verstappen has expressed disappointment with the recent tyre rule experiment at the Monaco Grand Prix, likening it to the fast-paced but often frustrating gameplay of Mario Kart. The Dutch driver felt that the mandatory two-pitstop rules added jeopardy to the race and caused unusual tactics among teams.
Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing team struggled with pace on the street track, which exposed their weaknesses over bumps and kerbs. The driver finished fourth, just behind teammate Lando Norris, who secured his second win of the season in Barcelona.
Despite feeling that F1’s experiment hasn’t worked, Verstappen acknowledged that something was needed to make the Monaco race more interesting. However, he believed that the tyre rule changes didn’t address the fundamental issue of struggling with kerbs and bumps on the track.
Verstappen heads to next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona 25 points behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who is leading the championship standings.
