US Football, in partnership with the NFL, will select the 2028 Olympic flag football team. Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that USA Football is responsible for choosing the players, with no direct involvement from the NFL. However, the NFL has a significant indirect influence due to its connection with USA Football.
The organization’s bylaws require Goodell to appoint three board members and two of them will serve on the executive committee. The current board includes Packers CEO Mark Murphy and Colts COO Pete Ward. The issue is not just about who’s appointed but also whether they’re still serving their terms, as some have expired in 2024.
USA Football’s website shows only 11 members on its board, which raises questions about compliance with the bylaws that mandate 15 directors. Additionally, two board members’ terms are set to expire in 2024, and their status is unclear.
Given Goodell’s control over three board seats and 40% of the executive committee, he will indirectly influence the overall selection process and how the Olympic roster is built. With flag football becoming an Olympic event with active NFL players eligible, USA Football must address its business quickly to avoid scrutiny.
