Pope Leo XIV visited Rome’s Capitoline Hill on Sunday, where he met with Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and expressed his gratitude for the city’s warm welcome. In a brief speech, the Pope emphasized the importance of spreading the Gospel and working together with Romans to uphold values such as humanity and civilization.
Paraphrasing St. Augustine, Pope Leo stated that “for you and with you I am Roman!” He invited civic leaders and citizens alike to collaborate with him in promoting the Church’s mission and supporting vulnerable populations through education, charity, and artistic expression.
The Pope also thanked Rome for hosting millions of pilgrims during the upcoming 2025 Jubilee of Hope, a celebration that requires the efforts of local authorities. As part of this event, Pope Leo expressed his appreciation for the city’s support and looked forward to working with Romans to make a positive impact on the world.
