Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has taken exception to The Wall Street Journal’s portrayal of Big Pink, a 42-story office tower in downtown Portland, as a symbol of the city’s decline. After reporting that the building went on sale with an asking price $70 million, 80% less than its original purchase price a decade ago, Wilson accused the paper of overlooking Portland’s progress.
In contrast to the Journal’s negative tone, Wilson highlighted the city’s rapid improvements in public safety, new residents, and business opportunities. He also pointed out that a recent poll showed that 69% of Portlanders want the police force per capita to match those in other major cities.
The sale of Big Pink has sparked debate about downtown Portland’s fortunes, with some viewing it as a warning sign for what can happen when cities lose businesses. However, Wilson sees it as an opportunity to make changes and improve the city’s budget, which will be voted on this week.
