Google has announced significant updates for its Android Auto infotainment operating system. The changes include an updated Spotify app with the addition of “Spotify Jam,” a feature that allows users to share control of an audio source across their individual devices.
Users will be able to join a playlist by tapping the “Jam” icon on the car’s touchscreen, then scanning a QR code to start adding songs. This feature is more inclusive than Apple Music’s similar SharePlay, which requires all participants to have an Apple device.
Google is also introducing support for Quick Share in cars with Google built-in, allowing users to add stops to in-progress Google Maps routes and other features. Additionally, passkey support will be added to the infotainment OS.
A new light mode theme is being worked on, although it was not explicitly announced as part of the rollout. Browser and video apps are also coming soon, with gaming apps already available in beta. The browsers feature is currently available in beta for cars with Google built-in, while video apps will be rolled out “soon.”
