Gene-Editing Therapy Saves Infant’s Life in Medical Breakthrough

US doctors have successfully treated a baby with a severe genetic disorder using customised gene-editing therapy. The child, diagnosed with the condition that affects about half of those affected in early infancy, received treatment at a US hospital. This marks a significant milestone in medical research, paving the way for further complex gene editing techniques.

Dr David Liu, a professor at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, invented this innovative therapy. However, he acknowledges potential barriers to its widespread adoption, including increased costs and regulatory hurdles. Despite these challenges, Dr Liu is optimistic about overcoming them to bring this life-saving treatment to patients worldwide.
