The Bay Area Reporter has won multiple California Journalism Awards from the California News Publishers Association for its coverage of arts, news, and opinion. The publication received a first place award in editorial comment for “Shame on the US Postal Service,” which criticized the agency’s rejection of a postage stamp honoring Matthew Shepard.
Assistant Editor John Ferrannini won first place in the local election category for “SF mayoral forum in queer district lacks LGBTQ questions.” He also received second place for “Queer young adults say coming out deepened their faith” about Beloved Arise, a Seattle-based nonprofit.
Arts contributor Jim Gladstone took first place for “Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge’ in Berkeley,” a play about the late gay writer James Baldwin. Arts and nightlife editor Jim Provenzano took fourth place for “Richard Hunt, the gay Muppeteer: ‘Funny Boy,’ Jessica Max Stein’s biography.”
In film and TV writing/reporting, Tim Pfaff won first place for “Leonardo da Vinci” – Documenting the supreme Renaissance Man.” Michael Flanagan received first place in music writing/reporting for “Finding David Bowie’s queer roots.”
Bay Area Reporter publisher Michael Yamashita praised the staff and contributors, saying he’s proud of their accomplishments and gratified by the recognition. He noted that the diversity of arts coverage continues to shine through the awards.
