Gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following her arrest in Fairmont, West Virginia. On May 17, police stopped Retton after receiving a report about a person driving erratically in a Porsche. She was found to be intoxicated and slurring words, failing a field sobriety test.
Retton, 57, refused to take a roadside breath test or blood sample, but eventually posted a $1,500 personal recognizance bond to be released from custody. Her attorney has not commented on the matter.
This is not Retton’s first public health issue in recent years. In 2023, it was reported that she had been hospitalized for pneumonia, which left her oxygen levels critically low. Despite being placed on oxygen treatment, her condition worsened before improving enough to be sent home after several weeks of hospitalization.
