Researchers at UC San Francisco have discovered that drinking water can benefit a range of conditions, including obesity and migraines. A systematic review of available evidence found that staying hydrated can aid in weight loss and help prevent kidney stones, migraines, urinary tract infections, and low blood pressure.
The study analyzed 18 randomized controlled trials and found the most evidence in favor of drinking water to prevent kidney stones and promote weight loss. Drinking eight cups of water a day significantly decreased the likelihood of getting another kidney stone. Several studies also found that drinking about six cups of water a day helped adults lose weight, although this effect was less pronounced in adolescents.
In addition to its effects on obesity and kidney stones, drinking water may also help prevent migraines, control diabetes, and lower blood pressure. The researchers concluded that encouraging people to drink water before meals could be a simple and effective intervention for weight loss, especially given the increasing prevalence of obesity.
While dehydration can be detrimental in some cases, such as for individuals with kidney stones or urinary infections, drinking enough water is essential for overall health. As the researchers noted, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to water consumption, and more research is needed to fully understand its benefits and limitations.
