Stowaway Tries to Travel for Free at US Airports Before Paris Flight

A 57-year-old woman, Svetlana Dali, evaded security to be a stowaway on a New York-to-Paris flight last month. She claims to have attempted similar stowaways at other US airports in the past. Dali has permanent US residency and no criminal history, but faces charges of attempting to travel without a ticket.

According to prosecutors, Dali tried to sneak into secure areas of Miami International Airport in February, before being turned away. The government is concerned that she might flee while awaiting trial. A court-appointed lawyer for Dali stated that her behavior was “an aberrant act” and unlikely to happen again in the future.

Dali was released from hospital with an undisclosed treatment after being treated for an unknown condition. She now faces strict pretrial conditions, including electronic monitoring, a ban from airports, and a curfew. The judge also ordered her to undergo mental health treatment.

The airline, Delta Air Lines, has stated that its security infrastructure was sound and that the breach was caused by “deviation from standard procedures”. Dali will face trial for attempting to stowaway on a flight without a ticket.
