A Chinese paraglider was unexpectedly pulled over 28,200 feet into the air after being caught in a powerful “cloud suck” phenomenon, which can be deadly for pilots. The incident occurred on May 24 as Peng Yujian tested his new equipment at an altitude of around 10,000 feet. A strong updraft lifted him nearly 18,000 feet higher before he was flung another 10,200 feet into the sky. Despite being exposed to extremely cold temperatures and possibly losing consciousness, Peng managed to land safely 20 miles from his launch point. The incident highlights the risks associated with cloud suck, a rare but potentially fatal meteorological phenomenon that can cause wind speeds of over 1,000 feet per minute.
