A man, Paul Doyle, 53, has been charged with various crimes after a car crashed into a crowd of pedestrians following Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade on Monday. The incident occurred on Water Street in the city centre and left at least 79 people injured.
According to police, Doyle was believed to have acted alone and dodged a road block by tailing an ambulance responding to a report of a person in cardiac arrest. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of horror as the car struck and tossed a person in the air before swerving into the crowd.
Two people, including one child, sustained serious injuries, while seven others remain in hospital in stable condition. The youngest injured was nine years old, and the oldest was 78.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and work with prosecutors to review evidence. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said that detectives were working “tirelessly” to answer questions and provide further information when possible.
The city was celebrating Liverpool’s record-tying 20th title when the driver turned down a street full of fans, but quickly shifted from joy to tragedy. Police have asked people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident and refrain from sharing distressing content online.
