Kaspersky Reveals 14% Increase in Cyber Threats in 2024, Highlights Key Risks and Recommendations

Kaspersky’s detection systems revealed a significant increase in malicious files detected daily in 2024. On average, the company identified 467,000 malicious files per day, representing a 14% rise compared to the previous year.

The majority of these threats targeted Windows, accounting for 93% of all malware-filled data detected daily. Malicious scripts and MS Office document formats were among the top three threats, making up 6% of all malicious files detected.

Experts warn that cyber threats continue to evolve, with a surge in Trojan detections (33% increase) and Trojan-droppers (150% increase). These types of malware can deliver other malware to a victim’s computer or phone without their knowledge.

Kaspersky experts highlight several key trends in the evolving cyber threat landscape. These include attacks on trusted relationships and supply chains, as well as phishing and banking malware campaigns targeting social media users. Additionally, AI tools are being used to generate new malware or facilitate phishing attacks.

To stay protected against these emerging threats, Kaspersky provides recommendations for both individual users and organizations. For individuals, this includes:

* Avoiding downloads from untrusted sources
* Not clicking on links from unknown sources or suspicious online ads
* Using two-factor authentication and strong passwords
* Keeping software updated

For organizations, Kaspersky recommends:

* Regularly updating software to prevent exploitation of vulnerabilities
* Using strong passwords for remote desktop services
* Implementing comprehensive security solutions, such as Kaspersky NEXT EDR Expert
* Staying informed about the latest threat intelligence and using backups that are isolated from the network.
