George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, has responded to fan criticism regarding the lack of a publication date for The Winds of Winter. Martin has been working on the novel for over 15 years. He acknowledged that some fans are frustrated with the delay and have expressed harsh reactions, including speculation about his health.
In response, Martin posted a statement on social media, saying, “I know, I know… you’ll be pissed off by this announcement.” However, he emphasized that he genuinely cares about all aspects of his work, including non-Winds projects. Martin is set to produce an adult animated feature film based on Howard Waldrop’s novella A Dozen Tough Jobs, which will be written by Joe R. Lansdale.
Martin also addressed the perception that fans are prioritizing The Winds of Winter above other works. He stated that he cares deeply about his entire body of work, including the Wild Cards series and anthologies edited with Gardner Dozois. The author acknowledged that some fans may not care about these projects, but he does.
Martin’s production company will also be adapting Joe R. Lansdale’s novella into a film, which is a take on The Twelve Labors of Hercules. This project marks the latest in Martin’s efforts to expand his brand beyond Westeros and The Winds of Winter. Despite fan pressure, Martin remains committed to his projects, stating that he never finishes a book if he doesn’t feel it meets his standards.
