Measles Outbreak Spreads to Arapahoe County

A second Arapahoe County resident has tested positive for measles after exposure on a Turkish Airlines flight that landed at Denver International Airport in May, according to Colorado public health officials. The seventh case of the year was confirmed in a vaccinated adult who was a passenger on the flight.

The state’s seventh measles case involves an out-of-state passenger who had the disease and visited several locations in Arapahoe County, including Casa Vallarta, Colorado Athletic Club Denver Tech Center, Country Fair Garden Center, Golden Saigon Restaurant, Comfort Suites Golden West, and Evergreen Wine and Liquor. These businesses were visited between May 22-25.

Public health officials are urging people who may have been exposed to monitor themselves for symptoms, which can include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash, usually starting several days later. Measles is highly contagious but preventable with the MMR vaccine, and in most cases, vaccinated individuals who contract the disease experience milder symptoms.

Colorado has seen six other measles cases this year, its highest since 1996, including in Pueblo, Denver, and Archuleta counties. Free MMR vaccine clinics are available for those exposed to measles, offering protection against the highly contagious but preventable disease.
