The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a nationwide recall of over 100 tons of beef products, including cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew, due to the presence of fragments of wood. The recall was triggered by complaints from three consumers who found hard or sharp foreign objects in their meat.
Hormel Foods, the manufacturer of the affected product, has voluntarily recalled 17,080 cases of 20oz Dinty Moore Beef Stew, which may contain extraneous wood material. The company is urging customers to discard the recalled products and contact them if they have any concerns.
According to the FDA, the presence of wood in food can cause traumatic injuries, including lacerations, perforation of tissues, and damage to teeth and gums. While small pieces of foreign materials may pass through the gastrointestinal tract without complications, large or irregular-shaped fragments can lead to serious problems, such as choking, throat lacerations, ulceration, and even death.
The recall affects products with a “Best by” date of February 2028 and a specific lot code (T02045). Customers are advised to check their products before consuming them. No other Hormel products are affected, and no illnesses or injuries have been reported so far.
Consumers can contact Hormel Foods at 800-523-4635 for more information about the recall.
