Microsoft Brings Anonymous File Sharing to Android Users

Microsoft has finally brought its popular feature of anonymous file sharing from iPhone users to Android users. The new functionality allows recipients to open shared Office files without needing to sign in to a Microsoft account.

To use the feature, the sender needs to have version 16.0.18827.20066 and up of Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint installed on their device. They share the file by opening it in one of these apps and tapping the share icon, then entering the recipient’s email address or copying the link manually.

The receiver can then open the link on their Android device to view the shared document without signing in. However, they will be prompted to sign in before viewing the file. If they dismiss this prompt, the file will open in view-only mode, allowing them to read but not edit the document.

This feature is a long-awaited improvement for Android users who previously had to log in to their Microsoft account every time they opened a shared Office file. It’s a small step towards playing catch-up with Google Drive, which has supported anonymous file sharing for a while.
