Teen Wins Scripps National Spelling Bee After Decades-Long Dominance

Thirteen-year-old Faizan Zaki triumphed in the 21st round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, securing the national title and a $50,000 prize. The Texas native correctly spelled “éclaircissement” to take the top spot, marking the 100th anniversary of the competition.

Zaki’s win was unexpected, coming just months after he came in second place last year behind 12-year-old Bruhat Soma. However, Zaki showed resilience and determination throughout the competition, overcoming a nearly lost round and a dramatic stumble over “commelina” to secure his victory.

The 13-year-old’s success also made him part of an exclusive club, as he became the first former runner-up to win the title in nearly 25 years. His win coincided with a milestone for the competition, which has produced several historic moments throughout its history, including the most controversial tie in its history in 2019.

Zaki’s father praised his son’s skills, saying he “knows the dictionary in and out.” The teen’s victory will be remembered as a triumph of perseverance and dedication to learning.
