The Dallas Cowboys have signed former Patriots quarterback Joe Milton as their latest developmental quarterback. The move comes after a failed attempt by the team to develop Trey Lance, whom they drafted in 2023.
In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots used the third overall pick on Drake Maye and selected Milton in the sixth round. However, before the offseason program began, new coach Mike Vrabel traded Milton to the Cowboys. The move was made after signing veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs as backup to Maye.
Milton played a crucial role for the Patriots in Week 18, leading them to a win over the Bills with 22-of-29 passing yards and a touchdown. Although he was disappointed by not being drafted higher, Milton expressed gratitude for his experience.
“Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer believes that Milton is still in the development stage of his career. However, veteran quarterback Dak Prescott also needs continued development, according to Schottenheimer. The quarterback position receives intense scrutiny, and the Cowboys are focusing on improving their QBs’ consistency.”
