The North Carolina women’s soccer team has advanced to its 28th national championship game after defeating Duke in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. This marked the fourth time these two teams have faced off this season, with North Carolina emerging victorious. The Tar Heels’ strong defensive effort led to a shutout win, marking the first time Duke was shut out since the season opener.
The win capped off a historic coaching career for Robbie Church, who retired after 38 years at the helm of Duke’s women’s soccer program. Church joins Mike Krzyzewski as the latest legendary coach to see their final season end with a loss in the Final Four. The Tar Heels will now face Wake Forest in the national title game on December 9th.
Kate Faassee scored the opening goal, followed by Olivia Thomas’ eighth of the season in the 24th minute. Faassee added two more goals, including one in the 59th minute, sealing the win for North Carolina. The team will look to claim its 23rd national championship title in Monday’s game.
