Oreo Maker Sues Aldi Over Packaging Infringement

Mondelez International, the maker of Oreos, is suing Aldi supermarket chain over allegations that it copied the packaging of Mondelez products to confuse customers. The lawsuit, filed in Illinois, claims that Aldi’s store-brand cookies and crackers “blatantly copy” Mondelez’s designs.

The company is seeking monetary damages and a court order to stop Aldi from selling products with infringing trademarks. Mondelez displayed side-by-side photos of multiple products, including Thin Wheat crackers similar to Wheat Thins, chocolate sandwich cookies matching Oreos’ blue packaging, and red boxes for Golden Round crackers and Ritz crackers.

Aldi has faced similar lawsuits in the past over its packaging, including a recent case in which it infringed on an Australian court’s copyright of Baby Bellies snack puffs. The company’s CEO will reportedly take over as U.S. CEO next month, but Aldi did not respond to messages seeking comment on the current lawsuit.
