Billie Piper Returns as Doctor Who Companion Rose Tyler in Finale

Billie Piper reappeared on Doctor Who after nearly 20 years, surprising fans in the show’s latest season finale, The Reality War. She played the role of Rose Tyler, companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. Piper was introduced without a prior leak, leaving fans wondering if she would continue playing the character.

BBC officials initially denied reports that the show faced cancellation but later stated they wouldn’t make any decisions until the latest series had aired. As of now, 21 out of 26 episodes have been broadcast, with five remaining for a spinoff starring Russell Tovey.

TV critic Scott Bryan praised Piper’s return as a pivotal moment for the show. “It felt like a pitch to Disney, saying: ‘Hi, please renew us, we’ve got Billie Piper.'” However, no confirmation has been made regarding the future of the Disney deal or when the remaining episodes will be aired.

The show has struggled with falling viewing figures since Russell T Davies’ return in 2023. Some fans expressed concerns about the show’s future, while others were excited to see a familiar face return.

Christopher Eccleston, who starred alongside Piper as the Doctor, previously backed her for the role. Dan McLaughlin, who watched the finale with fellow fans, was initially surprised and felt “deflated” by the appearance of Rose Tyler. He expressed concern that bringing back old characters might limit the show’s originality.
