Nigeria Floods Claim Over 200 Lives, Thousands Missing

Deadly floods in Nigeria have claimed over 200 lives and left thousands missing. The town of Mokwa in north-central Niger State has been severely affected, with rescue efforts having ceased due to the high likelihood that those still unaccounted for are dead.

The flooding, described as the worst in the area in 60 years, hit Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa after torrential rain. Residents described seeing their homes and family members washed away, including one man who lost his wife and newborn baby. The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) has announced relief packages for those affected, while the Nigerian Red Cross has reported significant loss of life.

Floods are common in Nigeria during the rainy season, which lasts from April to October, but recent events have been severe. In 2022, over 600 people died and 1.3 million were displaced due to severe flooding, with similar reports expected this year. Authorities will soon begin digging out corpses buried underground in an effort to prevent disease.
