EV Interest Plummets as Tesla’s Image Suffers

The interest in Electric Vehicles (EVs) among American adults has dropped to 16%, the lowest level since 2019, according to a new survey by AAA. The decline in enthusiasm is attributed, in part, to the polarizing actions of Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

While some Americans cite saving money on gas as their main reason for interest in EVs (74%), others are concerned about the environment (59%). However, Musk’s reputation has taken a hit due to his involvement with far-right politics and his controversial behavior. A chainsaw-wielding appearance at a rally and two Nazi-style salutes at a Trump inauguration event have contributed to this decline.

The survey of 1,128 U.S. adults found that 63% are unlikely or very unlikely to purchase an EV for their next car, up from 51% in 2022. In contrast, hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars remain attractive options for consumers who may still be interested in electric vehicles.

As the EV industry navigates this shift, it remains to be seen whether other car companies can deliver electric vehicles that Americans will be excited about or if Tesla’s reputation can recover and regain its former appeal.
