Luca Guadagnino Sets Sights on AI Drama ‘Artificial’

Director of ‘Call Me by Your Name’ to Helm Film About OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Turbulent 2023

Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is in talks to direct a new comedy-drama about the behind-the-scenes drama at OpenAI, with sources indicating that production could begin this summer. The script, penned by novelist and screenwriter Simon Rich, tells the story of CEO Sam Altman’s firing and rehiring in 2023.

According to Rich, ChatGPT, the AI model developed by OpenAI, has a “raw and emotional” voice that is “intense and unpredictable,” despite its initial design as a non-threatening character. The project has been fast-tracked by Amazon MGM, with hopes of beginning production soon.

Guadagnino’s casting choices for the film have also generated buzz, with Oscar nominees Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Yura Borisov reportedly in the running. This latest project joins a growing list of films centered around AI, including Anne Hathaway-starrer thriller “Alignment” and Joseph Gordon-Levitt-directed untitled thriller.

Guadagnino’s recent credits include the tennis drama “Challengers” and upcoming thriller “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.
