The Netherlands’ government has collapsed after far-right leader Geert Wilders withdrew his party from the governing coalition due to a row over migration. Prime Minister Dick Schoof confirmed he was stepping down, and the cabinet offered its resignation to King Willem-Alexander.
Wilders had pushed for 10 additional asylum measures, including halting application processing and limiting family reunification. However, many of these proposals were already included in the coalition agreement, sparking criticism from his former coalition partners. They accused Wilders of engineering the crisis.
The collapse comes after just over a year in office, during which the government struggled to implement policies due to infighting among coalition members. Polls show that far-right and Green-Left parties are neck-and-neck, with migration issues fueling political volatility across Europe.
Wilders’ decision to collapse the government appears to be a strategic move to boost his party’s chances in the next election. However, his reputation for recklessness and prioritizing personal ambition over national stability may complicate his ability to form alliances after the next election.
