Chi-Chi’s, a beloved Mexican restaurant chain, is set to revive after a 20-year hiatus. Michael McDermott, the son of one of the original co-founders, recently announced plans to launch full-service restaurants across the country.
The chain initially opened its doors in 1976 and expanded rapidly, reaching over 200 locations by 1995. However, it filed for bankruptcy in 2003 due to a hepatitis A outbreak that claimed four lives and sickened around 660 people in Pennsylvania.
By 2024, Chi-Chi’s had dwindled to just 65 restaurants before closing permanently in September of the same year. Despite this, the brand has maintained a presence on store shelves through Hormel Foods’ production of packaged products.
McDermott aims to revive the classic dining experience with modern influences, citing the positive impact Chi-Chi’s has had on individuals and families nationwide. He plans to combine traditional flavors with contemporary elements, hoping to resonate with today’s consumers. The revamped restaurants will also feature newly developed salsas, tortillas, seasonings, and cocktails.
