US Food Recalls Rise Amid Outbreaks of E. coli and Salmonella

The recent string of food recalls across the United States has left many wondering about the country’s food safety system. In the past month, organic carrots were recalled after a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to 18 states, one person died. This week, cucumbers in 19 states have been recalled due to salmonella cases affecting at least 68 people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders with slivered onions resolved.

These incidents raise concerns about the country’s food regulation, even as the number of recalls this year appears to be on track to decrease slightly. On “Post Reports,” co-host Elahe Izadi talks with national health-care reporter Rachel Roubein about how food regulation works and how bacteria like salmonella can contaminate produce.

The show also explores ways to ensure kitchen-safe produce and discusses recent events, including the resurgence of the Syrian civil war, President-elect Donald Trump’s defense secretary pick, and President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter.
