Former President Barack Obama and Steve Bannon, a Trump administration strategist, have expressed concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on American jobs and politics. Both men agree that AI could displace large numbers of white-collar workers, particularly those in entry-level positions.
Obama recently directed his nearly 130 million social media followers to articles discussing the potential effects of AI on the US economy. One article, from Axios, quoted Dario Amodei, CEO of AI startup Anthropic, warning that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs, leading to unemployment rates of 10-20% in the next few years.
Bannon has also sounded a similar warning, stating that AI will be a major issue in the 2028 presidential campaign. He warned that entry-level jobs in administrative, managerial, and tech fields for people under 30 could be “eviscerated.”
Experts agree that the US government is not doing enough to caution workers about job losses due to AI, which may lead to panic.
The lack of federal regulations on AI in the US has also been noted. Unlike some other countries, there are currently no laws or regulations governing AI use and development.
Obama’s concerns about AI’s impact on jobs have been expressed before. In April, he told a school’s president that more advanced AI models could code better than 60-70% of coders now. He warned that highly skilled jobs in Silicon Valley would become obsolete due to the rise of AI.
As AI continues to advance and become increasingly integrated into various industries, it’s clear that both Obama and Bannon are right to be concerned about its potential impact on American jobs and politics.
