Cosmic Motion Show Launches at American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City is launching a new space show called “Encounters in the Milky Way,” which explores the history and future of our galaxy. The immersive show will open to the public on June 9, featuring high-resolution projections and immersive sound.

Developed by a team of astronomers, scientific visualization experts, and artists, the show aims to explore the dynamic movements of the universe, tracing the Milky Way’s past over billions of years and projecting its future across millions more. The show has been particularly supported by the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, which mapped nearly 2 billion stars in the Milky Way.

According to Jackie Faherty, curator of the show, the Gaia data provides an unparalleled visual experience, including a new visualization of the dramatic merger of the Milky Way with smaller satellite galaxies. The production team spent over a year creating the 25-minute show, utilizing advanced sound systems and simulation data to create a richer and more sophisticated experience.

The program is expected to be screened at the museum for about three years, offering visitors a journey through the history and future of the Milky Way galaxy. Faherty hopes that the space show will inspire people to explore the data available to them, making discoveries and sparking curiosity about the universe.
