Costco, known for its bulk shopping and affordable prices, is now testing new technology to tackle one of its most frustrating aspects: long checkout lines. The company plans to give customers the power to scan their own purchases using a smartphone app.
Members will download an app, scan a QR code at the store, and use their phones to scan items as they shop. Once the cart is filled with groceries, the member can pay via the app and head to a dedicated checkout line for final verification by a store associate.
This new system, dubbed “scan-and-go,” isn’t available everywhere yet but has shown promising results in early tests. According to Costco CEO Ron Vachris, the technology was “very positive.” If successful, it could speed up or eliminate long checkout lines, making shopping at Costco more efficient for customers.
