NFL quarterback Derek Carr has announced his retirement due to a shoulder injury, citing the desire not to take money from the New Orleans Saints without contributing on the field. The 2023 signing of a four-year $150 million contract with the Saints is now void, as he forfeited his base salary for the 2025 season.
Carr suffered a labral tear and significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff, which would have required surgery or attempted play-through with risk of injury. He told Front Office Sports that neither option felt right, leading him to prioritize his health and well-being over team financials. Saints coach Kellen Moore praised Carr’s professionalism and hard work, acknowledging the team knew about his injury since March.
Now in retirement, Carr is open to exploring broadcasting opportunities at the college level or potentially coaching. However, he says he’s enjoying spending time with his family and finding peace away from football.
